Students of
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have called off their
protests. They made the announcement on Saturday (February 12) at 7:30 pm. At
the same time, they hoped that all the demands would be implemented as per the
assurance of the Education Minister.
On the other hand,
in the presence of the present in-charge Proctor Ishrat Ismail, Shafiul Islam
and Mazhar Majumdar, they also demanded justice for the sexual harassment of
the protesting students.
Earlier in the day,
at 5:30 pm, the students sat in a meeting with the Minister of Education in the
'D' building of the university to discuss the next steps. After the meeting, a
press conference was held to announce the withdrawal of their position and
movement. Mohaiminul Bashar Raj spoke on behalf of the protestors.
It may be mentioned
that the students of SUST have started protests demanding the resignation of
Vice-Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed from January 16. Education Minister Dr Dipu
Moni arrived in Sylhet on Friday to hold talks with the protesters. In a
meeting with the minister in the afternoon, the students made eight demands and
13 recommendations.
Despite promising
to comply with all the demands, the education minister said that the main
demand of the students would be to inform the chancellor about the resignation
or removal of the vice-chancellor.
